Sunday Bolognese Sauce

Slow-cooked hearty Bolognese sauce - a blend of savory minced meat, tomatoes, and aromatic herbs - generously spooned over a bowl of fresh pasta and garnished with fresh parsley and parmesan. Inspired by Marcella Hazan’s Bolognese Sauce.

INGREDIENTS

1/2 lbs ground beef
1/2 lbs ground pork (or addt'l 1/2lbs ground beef)
1.5 tbsp olive oil
3 tbsp butter (unsalted)
1 cup whole milk
1 cup white wine or chicken stock
1/2 large onion
1/2 cup carrot (finely chopped)
1/2 cup celery (finely chopped)
3 cloves garlic (minced)
14 oz crushed tomatoes
3/4 cup marinara sauce
2 tsp Italian seasoning
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
1 dash nutmeg
Salt & pepper (to taste)
Grated parmesan cheese (opt.)

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1
Heat butter and olive oil in a large pot on Medium heat. Add the onions and cook for 3-5 minutes, or until translucent and fragrant. Add garlic, celery, and carrots to pot. Sauté for 1-2 minutes.

STEP 2
Add ground beef and pork to the pot and stir to combine. Cook for about 5 minutes, or until meat is browned.

STEP 3
Add white wine (or chicken stock) to the pot and simmer until it is cooked off - stirring often. This can take anywhere from 30-45 minutes. 

STEP 4
Add milk to the pot and simmer until it is cooked off - about 30-45 minutes - stirring often. 

STEP 5
Add the following ingredients to the pan and stir to combine: crushed tomatoes, marinara, Italian seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Turn heat to low and let simmer (uncovered) for 1 hour or more, stirring occasionally.

STEP 6
Remove from heat. Serve sauce over your choice of al dente pasta, garnished with grated parmesan and fresh parsley.
